After waiting 4 days for Fedex to get my new engine to the house, I have it mounted, test run and have a few opinions.
I was replacing a 1994 Sailmaster. The Nissan and sailmaster are very much alike. The shafts are the same length. Gear shifts on the front. The Nissan weighs 6 lbs heavier than my sailmaster and weighed 94 lbs on my bath scale. The Nissan seems to be built lighter. Lower unit profile is smaller. The prop is much smaller.
I was concerned about the tilt clearance and using the stock garhauer maount. I am pleased to report, The Nissan fits better than the Sailmaster. It has no problem clearing the stern pulpit.
I do not like the gearshift position. It is on the front of the motor and on the starboard side. That is not as convenient as my motor is mounted on the starboard side of the boat. Also, the tilt lever seems like a country mile over the side.
The positive is the engine has all the castings and tangs to mount the throttle mounted shifter the Mercury's have. I will wait a while before I start messing with this.
I put an hour on it today between squals. The engine is smooth and quiet. It does not seem to have nearly the docking power the sailmaster had (when running right). I suspect the top end will better based on the prop.
