I did a 35 mile break in run on the new engine and have come up with a small snag.
Above half throttle there is very little throttle response. The speed does not come up much either. I suspected the engine was over propped and the RPMS were below the reccommened 5000-6000. So... I went out and purchased a Tiny-tach. It is a self contained rpm gage and hour meter. Waterproof and battery powered, I zip tied it to the carry handle.
Now, I know the engine is under revving. At full power, I get 4600 rpm. I need a little less prop. I have a 8.5d x7.5p and am considering a 7p instead. Anyone done this to the Nissan 9.8? The goal is not speed but rather to unload the engine slightly. Now that I know the rpm, I can plot fuel use Vs rpm . I also plan on doing a pull test on both props. I emailed Solas.com asking about the possibility of a 4 bladed prop that will fit the engine. Anyone who might me interested should do the same. They offer all sorts of specialty props and perhaps could make us a great sail-prop. Only 2 more hours to finish the breakin. I will let you know about the new prop.
I found it at southeast dist on Lane ave. It is available online and via ebay a little cheaper. It is self contained and self powered. There are 2 wires. The red wraps around a spark plug wire and the black goes to ground. I used a coil bolt as the ground. I ran the wireds through a rubber grommet on the port underside of the engine cowl. On mine it already had a slit.
There are several versions of this unit. I got the one that is unresettable and the one where the plug fires on every revolution.
