I’ve lost a couple of paddle wheels on the knot meter transducer from my Capri 25.

Do I need to pull the boat out of the water to replace the transducer? If not, how do you keep the boat from sinking during the replacement?

Thanks,

I actually haven't done this but I did observe someone doing this - while underway! (He took it out to clean it). I asked him a similar question and his response was "you just have to be fast". He had a plug to use while the transducer was out.

On the two different Knotmeters I've had, the paddle wheel sensor fits into a thru hull fitting. Both came with a plug that could be put in place when the sensor was pulled for cleaning. If you live in an area with rapid growth of marine creatures you may want to pull your sensor when it is not in use. Cleaning them can be a pain

Steve, this is one of those ,"holy Cow" operations when you first do it.

On the 25 I do it with a bucket and a large sponge(carwash type)

1)..open the covers over the sending unit. On the 25 it's under
the v bunks.

2)..keep the plug handy. Unscrew the retaing ring from the sending
unit and as you pull the unit be ready with your other hand
plugging the torrents coming through the hole just opened.

2)..now be ready to remove your hand and insert the spare plug.

3)..sponge up the water in the v berth area.

4)..I keep a toothbrush in there to clean the rotor should you need
to, replace the rotor and reverse the process.

5)..take several deep breaths and have a cold one. Next time it'll
be a cinch.

I'm asumming you have the plug that came with the sending unit.
It looks like the sending unit but without the rotor.

Good luck and all that

It is a bit un-nerving to look at the ocean through a hole in the bottom of your boat while swapping the plug for the transducer... but you get used to it. (the ocean water here is a pretty blue-green from that vantage point)

If you're quick you'll hardly get more than a pint or two of water in the bilge.
