"Keep Your Fuel Fresh"
I thought I would share with you some tips from Honda's carburetor manual for taking care of your fuel. Rebuilding carburators is by far the most frequent type of repair we do. Clogged carb jets tend to be a bigger problem for smaller outboards, but those of you with larger motors would probably benefit from this as well.
Storage Period / Recommended Service
Less than 1 month 1. Just close the fuel cap vent.
1 or 2 months 1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel and add fuel stabilizer. 2. Run the engine long enough so that the stabilized fuel reaches the carburetor(s). 3. Close the fuel cap vent.
2 months to 1 year 1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel and add fuel stabilizer. 2. Run the engine long enough so the stabilized fuel reaches the carburetor(s). 3. Drain the carburetor(s). 4. Drain the engine oil and filter if applicable and refill with fresh oil. 5. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Recharge it once a month. 6. Close the fuel cap vent.
Over 1 year 1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel and add fuel stabilizer. 2. Run the engine long enough so the stabilized fuel reaches the carburetor(s). 3. Drain the carburetor(s). 4. Drain the engine oil and filter if applicable and refill with fresh oil. 5. Remove the spark plugs and pour a tablespoon (5 - 10 cc) of clean engine oil into each cylinder. Rotate the engine to distribute the oil, and reinstall the spark plugs. 6. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Recharge it once a month. 7. Close the fuel cap vent. 8. When returning to service, drain and refill the oil and the fuel.
