Gentlemen,

I've read you for a couple of years but have never taken part in any forum of any kind before. Thank you all for being so generous with your ideas and solutions to problems. Well here I am today with a problem of my own.

I own a Catalina 25 tall rig 1985. I sail it on Lake Ontario (Cobourg) on the Canadian side. Last year I've noticed that my boat didn't "sit" level in the water. I didn't think much of it, blaming it on poor stowage of my extra anchor, beer, tools, etc. I lifted the boat out at the end of the season, examined the hull for blisters and found nothing "abnormal".

This year, before the season started, I antifowled (V17) the bottom and late April, the boat went in. Went from the pier where the boats are launched to my dock, moored it and went on to helf other sailors to put their boats in. The following week, when I returned to the marina, I noticed that my boat was listing, heavily this time, to the port side. I checked everything inside and didn't notice anything wrong. The boat is practically empty right now so I can't blame poor storage!

A fellow sailor suggested that the hull might be water saturated, causing it to "list". What are your thaughts on this matter? Can a hull be saturated on one side only?

I am afraid to find out the source of my problem! I can see it costing thousands! Should I take the boat out right avay?

Any help would be appreciated,

thanks in advance,

Andre,

To directly answer your question, yes it can be waterlogged only on one side. If for example the source of the water is the rubrail, the water would begin entering only on the side with the problem.

It could still be other things too. Obviously, you don't have high/low tide to influence this, but do you still pay out a lot of scope on your dock lines? What side is your motor on? Is your watertank full or empty?

Hopefully it is one of these things. To be honest, if the hull is waterlogged that badly, I don't think it would matter whether you pulled it out or not. It would take some serious repair to fix. Odds are it isn't waterlogged though, especially if you didn't find any blisters.

Also, are you positive the deck isn't level? Could it be a crooked mast throwing you off?

I would opt for filling the STB water tank. I would say no to the waterloged hull. The hull is not coared. No wood inbetween the glass other than at through hulls. Several members have voiced concerns over this problem. If your hull had that much water content you would have a bit blister problem. You didn't say what keel you had. Swingers can get off center a little if they have some free play at the pivot. Hope this helps.

Andre,

I have a 1987 tall rig. My boat lists to starboard, but it's because of the outboard, water tank, & two deep cycle batteries all being on the starboard side. You mentioned the boat was empty - do you have the fuel tank & outboard off the boat? If they are both on the port side, that should be enough weight to cause the list. Could be on the bottom as well - that could cause a list!
