Good idea or bad one? I kinda like the idea of dropping the mainsail and not have to mess with it at the end of each day. Suggestions and recommedations?

Drop it where? You still have to deal with it. Flaking it on the mast and putting on the sail cover is less trouble than folding it up (properly) and stowing it below.

That's what I meant, Eric. Sorry I wasn't clear. Thanks for the advice. About how long can the sail stay flaked and covered - all season?

"About how long can the sail stay flaked and covered - all season?"

Most folks will leave their main flaked and covered on the boom all season.

If you're a racer with a fancy mylar main, you'll probably roll it up on a 'core'
for storage (no wrinkles).

Other suggestions for a 'no hassle' main are adding permanently mounted stretch cord sail retainers on the underside of the boom (no fumbling with sail gaskets) and 'lazy jacks' (guide lines that make the sail drop onto boom without falling off the sides).

I would think that it would be far easier to flake the sail on the boom and use a sail cover than it is to bend a sail on every time you go out then remove and stow after a days sail.

To save time, I flake and cover the main as I'm heading back to the marina so when I pull into the slip, I just have to loop my docklines on and head home.

"Everyone", except for those with small daysailors, uses a sail cover rather than bending on their main every time they go out. A few even have a jib bag so they can leave their jib hanked on.

If you flake your sail halfway decently under the cover you'll have no problems. Mast gates are a good option to have so you can flake the sail easily without a big "hump" forward by the gooseneck.
