The plexiglass (or Lexan) in the forward most ports (head area) on my '89 SR/WK are quite cracked though the cracking appears to be only cosmetic. Does anyone know where to get replacement "glass" for these Lewmar ports? I don't need the complete port, just new "glass". Most local (Central NY) glass people carry plexiglass up to 1/4" and nothing tinted as these are. Thanks!

I've been kibitzing on this forum for a couple of months now, including way too many hours browsing the archives. There are several good posts on ports that you can find using the search function. (Try searching on "port-light", "window", "port" and "plexiglass".)
On the other hand, one of my boat's PO's removed all the windows and treated their inner surfaces with automotive glass tinting that's held up pretty well. I will be replacing my windows soon - funds allowing - and will likely do the same. Just remember that window tinting makes a lousy privacy barrier when it's dark outside and the lights are on inside.
I feel your pain on this one. I have a perfectly good hatch on my 88 but the plastic is pretty much shot. You can either replace the whole hatch, or have it repaired. I would be affraid if I tried to repair it, I would need a new hatch in the end! I talked to bomar and the process of gluing the plexiglass into the frame has to be done just right and under very controlled conditions. I may "when I can afford it" order a new hatch and then take a stab at rebuilding the one I have. I would hate to end up waiting a couple of moths for a replacement part as sometimes happens with these old boats. Shame on Catalina for not using a standard size.
I replaced the plexiglas (it might have been Lexan instead) in our 89 wing/tall hatch several years ago. I removed it, then took it to a plastics shop in Riverside, CA and had them do the cutting using the original (cracked badly) as a pattern. I think it cost me around $25. It was the thickest they carried (3/8 inch as I remember). I figured if it got damaged again I would just do it all over again. I found a good sealing caulk recommended by the glass people at West Marine. The seal got broken by someone pushing upward a few months back and I resealed it. I don't remember what I used for a sealant but maybe you might find my post on this in the archives??? I also checked all around for a replacement and emailed Bomar, etc. with no good results so opted to make this a "do it yourself" project. So far so good....
I guess I wasn't completely clear on this. I'm NOT referring to the main hatch over the v berth. The ones I'm referring to are the 2 small ports, 1 above the head and 1 above the head sink on the other side. They are attached to the aluminum frame via hinges and no sealing is required - the rubber seal is stationary in the aluminum frame. It would be a 5 minute job replacing these if I could find pre-cut & drilled replacements.
Have you contacted Lewmar about replacement panes?
I know you are referring to the port-lights in the head, but I had new glass for the main salon made by an auto glass store. They even had the glass tempered.
If they need holes drilled through them, you might even try a custom art glass store.
I haven't tried contacting Lewmar since I didn't have much luck contacting them about a winch problem. But the auto glass idea is interesting and I know you can buy a glass drill bit at Home Depot if necessary. Thanks for the leads. And yes, the hinged ports are nice!!
Port? I reread your post and NOW notice what you were asking. That reminds me that I have an opened bottle of port in the fridge.... The opening port glass in my boat is also "spider" cracked and doesn't seem to affect my ability to sail and so as long as it doesn't leak (it doesn't) and doesn't fall completely apart I will not worry about it. But if you find a source for replacement glass then I'd like to hear about it so I might know where to get some if necessary in the future.
