Probably not news to most, but I just found out about this yesterday:

http://www.freeboatingcharts.com/

Might be useful to some.

I have been messing around with it for the past couple of days and like it.

Free charts... I'm there! I down loaded the software and a load of charts already, got from Norfolk to Florida including ICW. Found one that will cover our trip to Bimini next year also. Free is good!

"Free is good!"

Well, we pay for them with our tax dollars, but IMHO free is the way it should be for publicly-developed (funded) resources.

S-57 format electronic charts are amazing. Highly accurate, interface direct with GPS, and loads of detail, and NOAA provides them absolutely free to download. Too bad the Canadian government contracted out their electronic nav chart compilation to a private company. They want over $1000 for the ENC's for the Gulf Islands (the ENC version of Canadian chart book #3313). That's way too much for recreational use, especially for transients like me who are only there for a couple of weeks every other year.
