Do marine heads installed in 2001's have the option of dumping their holding tanks manually at sea or do they all have to be emptied at marina pump out facilities? Thanks.

You can plumb any marine head to dump offshore. It just depends whether the work was done during installation or not. Factory installed marine heads are not plumbed for this by the factory, but you could add it.

I wouldn't suggest dumping unmaserated, untreated waste inside the 12 mile limit, or, if you are a coastal cruiser/day sailor, rigging your boat for dumping. The Coast Guard will nail you if you are boarded and inspected. We in the Great Lakes may not do so under any circumstances.

Perhaps Jim Baumgart has some insite regarding this issue since he cruises his C25 extensivley along the California coast, and I believe just go his Captains license.

Al, I would never dump unmacerated waste. I just want the option on the boat in the event a pump out isn't available, and then ONLY way out beyond the 12 nm limit. Any idea what a retrofit would cost, i.e. the Y valve and macerator? Thanks.

Frank,
Just look to see if you have a valve on the rear section of the tank
connected to the masserator pump then to the through hull.You should have 2 through hulls under water line....in and out

Frank, knowing that you are a Southern CA ocean sailor, you can pump overboard 3 miles out. Your boat needs to be plumbed for it and equipped with a special macerator pump (which grinds as it pumps). Catalinas don't come from the factory with this. Most likely, for weekends to Catalina you won't need it. For longer trips it is very important. I have a porti-pottie so offshore dumping is simple.

"Problem" solved. All I have to do is install a Y valve in the discharge line and a thru hull just above the water line on the port side. To be used ONLY waaaaaaaay out at sea! 50 bucks for the Y, 50 or so to install.
