On my boat, I have re-installed the saildrive engine. I was not planning on installing a starting battery, but the more I think about it, the better things would be with one. The main reason is because the engines electrical system is already wired from the factory to use it's own battery. The house bank can be completely separate. The starting battery will be charged from the small internal engine charger (3amp) and the house batteries will be charged from belt driven alternator (35 amp). This gives me two completely separate systems. The question is, which electrical system should the bilge blower be supplied from, the house batteries or the starting battery?
I'd run the bilge (gas fume) blower off the cranking battery. I'd also install a Battery Combiner between the two systems, so as to bring both banks up to full charge as quickly as possible when either of them is being charged.
Are there pictures of the completed installatinon on your website? The progress you have made is really impressive, and I can't wait to have you join us in the upper lakes cruising group. I believe we will be sailing the North Channel this year. Most likely we will rendezvous at DeTour and sail from there to Blind River. If you have a dual battery system, (just my oppinion) I would want to be able to run the blower from what ever system has juice. If the cranking battery is dead, I would still want to vent the compartment. Have you thought of some form of passive venting as well. My fuel locker, which you had a chance to view in person, has both an active vent (fan) and passive venting. When ever a breeze blows over the hull a negative pressure forms at the transom pulling air out of the locker.
Was the saildrive on your boat installed after purchase or did it come from the factory that way. I have thought of putting a saildrive in my boat if it wasn't too expensive.
