My cetol (with a gloss topcoat) is reaching the end of its lifecycle. What's the best way to remove the finish so I can start over? Sanding? Heat gun? Chemical stripper?
You mentioned that you periodically refresh your Cetol finish with a quick rub-over coat. How often do you do this? One a month, season, year?
Reason I am asking is that I just finished my tiller with Cetol light, planning to re-finish everything else this Spring. I was reading the Cetol instructions on the can (not to mention previous posts in the archive on this great web site!) and came to the conclusion that I would lightly sand and refinish with one coat annually.
Every other year usually works...a coat or two. This stuff is really tough. You mentioned 'finished' your tiller. How many coats did you put on? If three, you'll be good for at least two years, probably more in WA.
Tom, I just re-did my hatchboards with regular Cetol and I am not happy with the outcome. I find regular Cetol too dark. I am going to re-do using Cetol Light. I called Interlux and they said to use Interstrip 299E to remove the new Cetol. It's about $30 a quart, though. The guy at Interlux also said I could sand off the new Cetol using 80-100 grit.
