Just had my boat hauled out for the winter and found that the centerboard came off?! The cable was snapped and the attachment hardware must have rusted.Has this ever happened to anyone else? Where can I get a new centerboard and hardware, including new cables, etc.?
Maureen... very sorry to hear the bad news. The board and blocks will have to be aquired from Catalina.
I've monitored this forum since January of '96 and your report is the first I recall of a lost centerboard though there have been reports of finding loose mounting blocks... meaning boards on their way to being lost.
There have been many reports of swing keels lost from C25s.
One of your task will be to assess the condition of the threads for the mounting blocks as you certainly wouldn't want to mount and lose another board because of a problem with sripped out threads that might only seem to hold. If the threads are not in good condition... some effort will then be needed to restore them... Catalina tech or a good marine mechanic should be consulted.
I don't mean to alarm you... it is likely that the last few threads on a couple of holes are damaged but that most are intact... in my humble opinion someone with a fair amount of expertise needs to make that evaluation. It would be very troublsome to conclude the threads need reworked by only evaluating the last few near the surface when it might be that the majority of the threads are ok.
I can see one good thing from this, your sailing will be greatly enhanced next season when the boat has a center board.
For those who remove the mounting blocks to add shims or pull the board for some reason... this is a reminder to use locktite.
Maureen The best place to get your centerboard and blocks are from where you lost them. They are probably at the bottom of your slip. If not there then between you slip and where you had it hauled out at. For a small fee I am sure you can get someone who cleans bottoms of boats to check your slip and if not there to swim the route you took to the haul out crane. It sure would be a lot cheaper and easier than getting a new setup. I have attached the links to a couple of post I have put out there on centerboards. One will give your diver an idea of what he is looking for, pictures of the blocks, and the other is how to get the centerboard back in your boat while it is on the trailer no mater where you get the parts from. Good luck finding the old centerboard. http://www.catalina25-250.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9513 http://www.catalina25-250.org/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=6044
I've got a diver coming this week to have a little swim under the slip. Makes me wish I had chosen pink bottom paint instead of black. With any luck, it'll be standing up stuck in the muck.
