Anyone have a suggestion (model etc) for a reasonable marine AM, FM, CD player? I am considering box speakers in the cabin and under the aft cockpit seats. Any suggestions there?

Thanks,

Don

Don,
These are strictly the opinions of one sailor but I have been involved with building electronic assemblies for 20 years. The only modification you will likely find in a reasonably priced marine radio is that the circuit boards have been conformal coated with a resin type product that essentially seals it from the elements. Higher end marine radios will add water sealed switches and similar improvements. Since you will most likely be placing your stereo in the cabin the conformal coating really doesn't offer much protection other than from humidity. Marine radios are designed to be used by power boaters in an outside environment. You can pick up a nice automobile radio for half the price of a marine radio. I paid $119 for a 4 channel 200w radio with a remote control I can use from the cockpit. When it finally succumbs to the environment I will replace it with a similar unit. I think this is one tradeoff you could make, save some cash, and end up with a better sounding product. I sail a C25 so I will let others reply to the speaker placement other than to say use magnetic shielded speakers in the cockpit unless you can keep them a good distance from your compass and autopilot. Same goes for the cabin speakers. A speaker mounted near the aft bulkhead can affect your cockpit instruments.

I bought mine from West Marine-dont remember the price, but it has worked well. Only change I would make is to put an exterior antenna for the radio. I get a lot of static when in port and hooked up to the shore power. Photos of installation:

the speakers are below the v berth reachable from the storage area under the berth. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

I took a different approach. Today you can buy a satellite radio with FM modulator (I have XM) for $29! (now ya gotta sign up for the service!) I added a mount just inside the starboard cabinway and put the satellite antenna up in the ceiling above it. I bought a Sony two speaker portable boombox and your done. The radio picks up the signal (FM) anywhere on the boat, inside and out. It is great! It also has no problem with fading channels and static. You can use the radio if you want to and even take it ashore while picnicing.

The good part is you can add a mount for your car and move it back and forth - or use it with your stereo at home also!

I installed a Kenwood automobile radio in one of those radio enclosures and purchased an iPod cable for it. You can control the iPod w/ remote while in the cockpit which is nice. An added benefit is iPod has its own battery so it draws less power than running the CD player.

Only negative is running any automobile stereo for more than 4 hours consumes alot of power, so a 2nd battery is in my future.

I have a car stereo in one of the above enclosure mounted on the aft side of the galley where it is close to the panel. Easy to reach and still out of the way of everything else. It was there when I bought the boat.

Hey Jay, what is that outlet to the left of your stereo?

I have a Pioneer car CD/stereo mounted just like Jay's except its on the opposite side of the sink, facing toward the aft berth. Also have 4 Bose speakers, 2 inside mounted in the V berth area and 2 under the wing seats. With the remote I can operate the stereo from the cockpit.

Kurt, this is no big deal.... but this forum software has always had a problem with screen resolution format resulting from a few differing issues which causes a whole thread to expand pixel width. The result is a thread which for those of us (perhaps old timers going half blind) with an 800 pixel width setting struggle to read because of the need to scroll laterally.

In the case of this thread, it was caused by pasting a long url into the text. It is slightly more inconvenient for the poster to name the url with the forum tool rather than copy and pasting it but it avoides the problem.
