In the summer in SF Bay it is not unusual to have to take a second reef at one point, only to shake it out later. Crossing the slot between Alcatraz and Angel islands gets hairy in the afternoon, sometimes blowing 25 to 40. Reefing the second reef and leaving my 150 (I know, too big) 50% out gives great control and power without having my toes in the water.

My Buddy Paul also has a second reef. This year he had a flattening reef also installed and swears by it. Can't argue with him as he keeps winning our class in the Brisbane Yacht Club races.

Whatever your set-up, learn to do it quick and easily. Practice. This will insure that you reef before you need to, rather than putting it off until you are in semi-trouble.

We single-hand a lot(mostly)and my single line reefing for both sets is key. Ease the sheet, outhaul, vang, come closer to the wind to luff the main, trim the topping lift, tighten the reefing line as you ease the halyard. Secure the reefing line and halyard, ease topping lift, make course, trim. By myself it takes 15 to 20 seconds. I have an autohelm.

Jim,

You don't happen to have pictures of your system by any chance?

And if you want to include a few extra photos of the Bay, the GG Bridge, etc., please feel free to rub it in!
