I'm trying to replace the backstay on Pie Seas 2 and the top of it (or rather the pin) has corroded itself into the top of the mast. I've tried heat and all sorts of methods but have now ordered a replacement masthead unit from CD. However I seem to have another issue. My current backstay runs from the masthead into a turnbuckle and then into a 'triangle' where it splits into two wires. My replacement single upper backstay has no turnbuckle with it, and therefore would appear to connect directly to the 'triangle'.
Is my turnbuckle on my existing backstay non standard, or do I need to be ordering a different part from CD? It would seem that the new backstay will fit- I'm just worried about lack of possible adjustment.
I dimly recall that CD offered a couple different backstay lengths for the C-25 standard rig (including the split adjustable feature). I think I was asked to measure mine before ordering. I'd suspect with the adjustable backstay there might not really be a need for the turnbuckle.
>"...pin has corroded itself into the top..."
I used an angle grinder to take the 'head' off the pin, and then ground out the center section of the pin so I was only needing to dislodge one side at a time. After that preparation, a sharp rap with a centerpunch and ball-peen hammer dislodged them pretty easily.
I'm with Clam here - measure the two stays, if you got the single backstay, it is most likely going to run all the way to the transom, and not to the triangle for the split.
We've measured the new backstay and it only goes down as far as the 'triangle'. I've spoken to CD and they confirmed I have the right #. They don't have a turnbuckle as you can make the adjustment via the split lower backstay.
