Hi All, I am taking Duane's suggestion and seeing if anyone would like to race the nationals with me. By the time the nationals roll around, I will have about two months experience with my boat and this is after 20+ years of not sailing. I have already made plans to go to the nationals but was just going to be a wall flower as I don't have the confidence in my racing skills/knowledge. But I would love to race with anyone that might be there without a boat. Let me know if you're interested. Cheers.
Dennis, sorry to hijack your thread, but this is a good time to speak up.
I'm in a similar situation, I've been contemplating nationals ( since Cleveland's just up the road from Cincinnati) and was thinking of doing the same as Dennis, but with very little arm twisting could be coaxed into racing. I'm going into my 4th season with our boat and finally starting to feel like I'm a sailor. I have a little racing experience, crewing for Steve Milby some and club racing a few times. If someone wants to captain, I'd be happy to crew. She may not be the fastest girl there (inboard, roller furler and all), but to me, she'll be the prettiest. Thanks,
Right now Kip and Dennis are all looking for crew and Al is on the thinking about it page. I've gotten interest from some others, such as Steve Milby, Val and a few others who had indicated they'd think about crewing.
Here's are my only requests with this. Please, grab every member you can - but don't go over the weight limit provided by PHRF-LE. Second, The more boats we can get the more fun this will be. So Kip and Dennis I don't want to see you sailing the same boat at nationals. I want each of you on your own boats, or at least wait until as late as possible to pair up if you can't get anybody else.
And last - if someone other than you drives, make sure they are a registered owner and an association member.
Dear Kip & Dennis: Just Do It! At the 2001 Nationals I had my three sons with me and in the middle of the race one is fishing off the stern (going for those big walleyes dad) the other was sleeping down below and the third was mad at me for not being so aggressive at the start. It didn't matter to me because I was racin in the Catalina Nationals and just seeing what the boat could do. I busted a tiller in the process and borrowed a drill from someone to fix it that night. It was great fun. My first ever race I went out to the starting line waited for some guy to set off a small cannon and just followed the crowd To me it's the challenge of getting there, set up and messing around in boats with other Catalinas How Kewl is that! yours, Ron Waiting for the snow to melt
Duane...I hope I'm not the "Don" with the racing experience you alluded to, because the only racing I've done is to the bathroom after too many beverages.
Dennis...Are you thinking of trailering or sailing to Cleveland?
Hi Duane, what do I need to do to be put on the "will race" list?
Hi Don, I am going to sail it down. It will take all of a day or better and will be my first extented cruz.
Hi Ron, It might come to that. The more I think of it, the more I feel I would just do it. The unknown to me is can we, do we race single handed? I don't know if my wife will be coming with me and she has no experience anyway. Cheers.

Dennis, you can race singlehanded, but it's hard to be competitive that way. I've raced in the nationals 5 times, and 3 times I went there without crew and picked up crew after arriving. If you need crew, there's always someone around who would like to go out and race. If you get your boat there, Duane will see to it that you have a good time!
PHRF LE rules prohibits single handed racing in JAM Fleets. Since this is also Cleveland Race Week there aren't as many people as normal. Keep hammering the forum, you'll find someone. I've put you on the will race list.
Well I've expressed interest in attending the nationals in the past and always was thwarted for one reason or the other. I actually planned to go to one a few years ago and was blocked from doing so when rt 4 out of Orlando was blocked by fire, that was the closest ever. On the way back from California this past summer we were thinking about Kansas B U T, and so it goes. I'm going to try for this years nat's as a wallflower, hoping that maybe this will be the one.

Yeah, its sure is going to take you all of a day or better. My guestimations put the straight line, over the water distance at around 175-200 miles from Port Huron to Cleveland. Having done the Lake Erie-to-Port Huron and back trip, I can tell you its quite a ride with motoring being about your only option on both rivers so bring plenty of fuel, especially on the up river trek.
As for the 90 mile jaunt across Lake Erie to Cleveland, the prevailing winds will probably put the wind on your nose at least to the islands, which may lenthen your trip considerably.
On every cruise I've been on, I've lost at least one day due to weather conditions. On that Port Huron-to-Lake Erie leg of the trip I mentioned earlier, it was planned as a one day shot, but I had to delay my departure by one day due to unsafe conditions, left the next day in somewhat iffy conditions which deteriorated as the day went on forcing me to seek safe harbor for the night and the entire next day. I finally made it home, but that planned one day shot took me 3 days to complete.
By no means am I trying to discourage you from making this trip, but you may have to add a few days to your itinerary to cover the distance. I would also add a few weather days so you are not forced to leave a port when it would be more prudent to stay put.
Hi Don, I am now near Port H, but that is where I bought the boat. By the time race weekend rolls around, I will be in the slip at Markley Marina on the clinton river, so I will be starting at the top of lake St. Clair. That is four or five hours reduced I figure.
Hi Duane, thanks for putting me on the list. Is there somewhere I can go to see what equiptment I need to have onboard? Cheers.
I am strongly considering attending the nationals as crew. I do not have a trailer so getting my boat there is cost prohibitive. I have only been sailing a couple years but it has nearly all been racing. Once or twice a week club racing and several small regattas. Before buying my boat I crewed on a J-24 for some pretty competitive club races and regattas.
My wife bought me VIP tickets for the LPGA tournament which is in Rochester that week. That creates a bit of a rub but maybe I can give them to her father.
The race sounds like it will be a great time, hope I can make it.
If Al decides to bring Galivant down I'll loose him as a crew, could use one more depending on the wind. To be honest, Nin Bimash has so much cruising gear on board we are routinely loaded at the top of the boot stripe. I'm sure I'll be pulling up the rear and anyone who feels intimidated by "racing" will have my company. I'm for a good time, and to meet some of you in person.

Don't be so sure about bringing up the rear, John. It might be a contest between you and me. :-)
I would love to come and crew for someone or bring "TSU" to defend her TR title ), but unfortunately we don't get back from our Belize charter until the day before the Regatta...bummer! Derek
Thanks for the idea Duane - but I've used all of our free miles... and from San Antonio you have to fly either to DFW (AA)or to Houston (CO) first...also a bummer! Derek
Ok Duane, count me in! I tried to get the info. from the documents link in the racing section, but it keeps referring back to the new site. If you could email that to me that would be great.
Frank, I'm sure about the standard rig. Just off the top of my head, I know the luff on my furling 150 is close to 28'. With the light winds on Brookville Lake, there 's been plenty of times I wished she were a tall rig. One of the reasons nationals will be fun, is that Lake Erie is an ideal place for my boat. Not to mention, Lake Erie was her previous cruising grounds.
Duane, could it have been Don Peet that you were thinking of.
