Over the week-end, I pulled the transom plate and combings so I could re-finish them. I am in the middle of that project now and was wondering about re-bedding the combings.

What compound would you guys recommend?

I believe your nomenclature is off, could you please describe the items you are asking about? By coamings do you mean the teak rings around the pockets in the seat backs? Is the transom plate part of your motor mount?

Frank,

Could well be my terminology. I found pictures of what I am talking about on Catalina Direct's web site.
http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=526

By combings, I do indeed mean the teak rings around the open storage compartments in the cockpit, one on each side (starboard and port).

By transom plate, I mean the teak piece that is attached to the transom. It is between the transom and the rudder. (Note that in the CD picture they show this as a plastic part, but mine is teak.)

In the CD picture, they are selling a kit that includes adhesive, but I can't tell what adhesive it is.

Does that help?

That teak transom trim piece on your boat was probably custom made by a previous owner since your are the first one I've heard of having one.

As for the teak trims rings, I'd just use a polysulfide caulk to adhere them to the openings. Stay away from the polyurethanes.

As for the teak coaming box trim rings, I attached mine with stainless, taperhead machine screws and stainless lock nuts. This makes it nice for removal the next time you refinish them.

As for transom trim, I used ovalhead, stainless wood or sheet metal screws.

Good luck!

Jargon check: The coamings are the raised sections between the side-decks and the cockpit, which also form the seatbacks in the cockpit. The trim rings are for the "coaming compartments" that are cut into the insides of the coamings. I agree with Don's prescription, but I've seen some attached with small panhead screws and finishing washers. Bedding is not really necessary there.
