I love this motor. What an improvment. besides the fact that it is dependable and quiet an added feature that i was not initially aware of was that there is no choke. It is somehow automatically controlled. I have been going out with mostly using the hand pull and not the electric start. I start are up and then attend to the getting the boat ready for undocking - the motor automatically goes into the slow idle with no adjustments/choke to push in. you just start it at the low idle position and then go about your business.
I did get the 25" shaft and saw the benfit last week. I went out on a day that was 10-20 mph but they predicted gusty winds to 30-40mph at night. Well it was late afternoon/evening not night but as I was coming back the heavy winds kicked in. I furled up the jib and even though my main was reefed, i could not handle the wind. i was in a semi-narrow channel area and had to tack my way home but was losing the forward motion due to the wind, currents, etc. I took in my main and started my motor. I am still in the break-in period and did not want to go over 30% power but had to do a bit more because the current was every so often turning the boat on me. I was at perhaps 40% - 50% power with about 4+ hrs on the motor alread (break-in period is 10 hrs). Anyway, we are talking a river here and did not expect to see waves like I use to see on Long Island Sound but they were coming from the north directly upstream and had time to build. they were crashing onto the hull but not above the deck. Even so, i was getting sprayed plenty and the boat was doing plenty of ups and downs. the 25" shaft never missed a beat.
As I approached the marina, the waves had settled but still a stiff breese. I then learned my lesson about trying to back into my slip with a wind /wave ripples coming from the bow, turned me around but i was clear of all boats in the slips. Docked it bow first - not a big deal but getting onto the finger slip, the boat almost pulled me into the drink just trying to hold it while also securing the lines.
Anyway just another experience. Motor is great. Went out yesterday afternoon, windy but controllable conditions. I am setting an all-time record for me for sailing in a season and this is since September ! First time I ever sailed in the winter but Virginia has more good days than Long Island and it has been a good winter..so far.
Gongrats, Larry... I have the 8 hp version of the same engine--the auto choke has worked flawlessly for 3 years now, and as you said, the engine starts and purrs like a kitten with no attention. The original engine that came with the boat was a 20-incher, and that was the P.O.'s mistake. That aside, as discussed in a recent thread, when in a somewhat tight situation (channel, weather, etc.), I like to get the engine running, even just idling in neutral, well before I'm really going to need it, and certainly before dropping sails. Murphy guarantees that the one time you need it quickly, it'll flood and take a few pulls (or a lot of electric cranking) to fire up. The Honda is quiet enough that the sailors around you won't notice... (I have a Honda 50 on another boat, and it's not hard to forget it's running!)
