I called a shop to get a quote on a bottom job. He told me I could reduce my costs by blowing as much of the old paint off with a pressure washer to lessen his work time.
Does anyone see a problem with this? My concern is blowing water into the gelcoat and problems caused as a result.
You probably aren't going to get a lot off with the pressure washer. I wouldn't worry about blowing water into the gel coat. That won't happen. I'd be more concerned about the wrong nozzle and doing damage to the gel coat if you aren't paying attention. Most people don't have that high of a pressure nozzle in their toolbox, but it could happen. If you are physically able, it is really only a day of two guys with orbital sanders.
You could also look into getting the bottom bead blasted or soda blasted.
