My boat was raised in San Francisco Bay, with heavy winds. I have it in the san joaquin valley with mostly mild winds. My question is about the jib. It is a 110 with a set of reefing points. Does anyone know how to rig this kind of sail to reef?
Off the top of my head: slack off on jib halyard; attach new tack to deck; switch the jib sheets to new clew; tie up the unused portion of sail similar to the way it's done in a mainsail; haul on halyard and trim sail. Most books on how to sail include a section on reefing and there you may find instructions and diagrams on how to reef a jib. I have a hank on 110 but just switch to an 80 if the wind gets too hairy on SFBay. Almost the same amount of effort.
Paul is right. My '78 came with a 130 that reefs down to about a 100%. I reef it just as Paul explains. It's good to remember that when it's reefed, it is much shorter on the luff, plus it now has that bulky reef "bundle" along the new foot, so it just won't fly as well as a separate sail. I use hanks as well, and use an 80% when the wind is screaming. It really keeps her on her feet. Good luck, Gary Encore! SR/SK #685
