My 8 hp Nissan 2-stroke seems to have a little water getting into the lower unit gear lube. I suspect the likely culprit is the 9-year-old propeller shaft seal. Unfortunately, the shaft housing is frozen to the lower unit, so I figured it would be easier to work on if I removed the lower unit.
Does anyone know how to remove the lower unit?
I unbolted it and disconnected the shift linkage but it appears there's more to disconnect somewhere. Any advice would be appreciated. (I have a Clymer Nissan/Tohatsu manual on order, but with only a couple of weeks to splash I'm anxious to finish this.)
Sorry, I can't help you with where you're going but when I had a similar problem it was cured by using some flexible sealer on the threads of the drain and fill screws.
Bubba, Did you ever get your lower unit off? I have a service manual for the Tohatsu 8hp (M8B)same as the nissan. If you need me to look up something let me know.
Gear Case Disassembly (from the manual) 1. Remove the lower spring pin form the shift rod joint with special tool. (This is the shift linkage joint, I used a small drift punch to knock the pin out)
2. Remove the gear case bolts and withdraw the gear case assembly downward. (There are 4 bolts, 2 on each side near the cavation plate)
That's it! It may be a little stuck, you might have to give it a couple smacks with a rubber mallet. Careful cast aluminum breaks easy! When you put it back together grease the shaft splines with a water proof grease so it won't stick the next time you need to remove it.
Thanks Tom. I already did what you said but there's some resistance to pulling the lower unit off. It dropped about an inch and doesn't seem to want to go any further. I was concerned that there might be something else to disconnect. It has sort of a spongy feel when pulling on it - like I'm stretching a hose or something. I'll poke around with it. The manual should be here by the weekend along with the seal kit.
