I've just found my cable to be loose and pulled it up through the tube with no problem. It looks like the fitting that was crimped on by the boatyard a few years ago is just missing. I need to get the boat hauled and am wondering if I should go with the standard cable like it came with (1996 model) or put on the new synthetic cable that I've read about in the archives. How is the new type of cable holding up? Is there anyone who has this cable fitted and keeps their boat in salt water?

Mark, I have a wingkeel so I can't offer you much guidance here. However I'm sure there are some WB people out there that have experienced this. How bout it WB guys, ever replace your cable with something other than cable?
Mark, I still have the stainless steel cable and I guard its use with the greatest of care. I have heard of no issues with the new cable Catalina is supplying.
Hi Mark, I can't give you personal experience with the salt water application but I've had no problem with the line in freshwater. You may have this information, but the Catalina "CB lifting tackle" diagram lists the synthetic line as "vectran v-12". My 2003 boat came with what I think is 3mm vectran. The latest Catalina diagram I have lists the use of 5mm vectran. I have the larger line replacement kit from Catalina (including the larger block), just haven't had any big need to replace the smaller line yet. The breaking stength of the vectran is greater than similar size wire/cable.The breaking strength of the 5mm v-12 is 4750# vs 1900# for the 3mm. On the internet, Warwick Mills purports to be the vectran application experts and invites contacts for free consultations. The West Marine catalog has vectran from New England Ropes and the neropes.com website also has some info on the v-12.
Just had an encounter with the new cable. My boat came with the synthetic line (Dacron) and I it snapped last weekend while in the water!!! I replaced it (quick fix) with a double braided nylon line that I had and it is working fine. I really do not know what is happening with the centerboard for this to happen. My centerboard also suffers from the clunking sound!
I guess I have to do some research and see what to do next.
Did the center board bottom? Where did the cable break?
Most all failures of the steal cables happened at or near the connection to the center board. The prevailing theory is that bottoming the center board pushes it into the trunk pinching the now loose cable against either the sharp edge of the sheave or its bracket slicing it.
That is a perfect assessmement. I had failure right at the attachment point of the centerboard. I do not know if there is a better way than replacing it with the same line again, my thoughts are if it happened once it will happen again. As for the line, boy it's chinzy! I can't believe they use such a thin line. I got under my father's Hunter and his is a full size line all the way to the centerboard.
