I'm trying to replace my deceased Honda 7.5. I located a deal on an Evinrude 9.9 4-stroke, XL shaft but it's the "remote version" with no tiller. Can I use that on my tiller C25? Would I need a special remote unit to mount in the cockpit? I've seen them before mounted on the wall of the cockpit bench. Anything else I would need to consider?
Philip, I have a remote controlled 9.9hp Yamaha in my boat and have a love hate relationship with it. Sure it is convenient to have the controls mounted in the cockpit but it does add a layer of complexity when I want to take the motor off. Additionally the linkage for the throttle and forward/reverse shifter has gone out of adjustment more then once. If I was to choose from scratch my ideal would be a totally independant tiller controlled 4 stroke (9.9hp)
Without a tiller, how will you turn the motor to steer it? I think the remote control motors are intended for powerboats with wheel steering, in which there is a push-pull cable running from the helm to the motor to rotate it. You might be able to order a tiller from Evinrude if the motor isn't an older model. Your post implies this might be a brand new one being sold by a dealership?. If it is new and still in the shipping crate, it should come with the remote controls (throttle and gearshift).
As far as steering goes I dont have any trouble with a tillerless motor. I live in Chicago and had a mooring last year and a star dock this year. Addiitonally, last year was my 1st ever sailing or for that matter operating any boat. Of couse the harbors are crowded. For the mooring I would approach into the wind at about 1 knot and cut the motor off approx 2 boatlengths away. Piece of cake. The remote was nice for this. I could focus better on the task at hand knowing I could get power or turn power off in the cockpit. The rudder develops steering control very quickly.
Thanks for the responses. I noticed that Arlyn Stewart had posted a C250 modification he calls a "softlink" that links the tiller to the motor. Would this work on my C25 to solve the problem of lack of outboard steering? Maneuvering in my marina can be tight with winds at times. Grabbing 2 tillers and a burst of throttle has helped me out of some jams in the past so I see how I might miss the steerable outboard. I'm interested in anyone's experience with a motor tiller linkage.
