Hi:

Finally, next week I will be having new cushions made for my 1980 Catalina 25. I picked out the fabric but am not sure how much to purchase. Does anyone know how much fabric I need to cover all of the cushions excluding the backs and bottoms which will be covered in vinyl? I checked some of the old postings and the amount ranges from 7 to 15 yards.

I'll post some pictures when they are done.

Thanks.

Will

I don't think anyone could answer this exactly, in that it all depends upon your fabric choice. You have not said how WIDE the fabric is! If it's 60" you will need lots less than if its 45". That might account for the disparity in the figures you have seen.

If there is a pattern of any kind, and if it must lay the same way, i.e. fore and aft, you are likely to have a lot more waste than you think you might. Also, it depends on whether you are using piping on the corners, or simply "wrapping" the old cushions, etc.

This is a bit like wall paper, or even carpeting....even if there is no 'pattern', there is likely to be a "nap" in the fabric that will want to go the same direction. Hence....wasted fabric.

Think it through....lay out all the cushions and measure them....allowing for a bit more waste than you think......

Also: ask whomever is doing the work for you. Some of this depends on how 'picky" you are about the final result. My advice.....go LONG on the fabric! You may be able to find other jobs for the left overs, but it's the pits to run short......(unless, of course you still have access to the same bolt of fabric you get the first order from).

I used 8 yards (60" wide rolls) of interior Sunbrella on mine. There was no pattern and I had the piping done with the vinyl from the bottom sides.

Pura vida,
Zach

Yes, I know the photos show the table mounted upside down. I have since fixed that problem that Frank Hopper and TakoKichi so eliquently pointed out.

The amount of fabric needed may also be dependent on the boats layout, traditional, dinette, or L-shape.

I know right. They do not look very good compared to the rest of the boat. I need to remove them, sand them and refinish them. The only problem is that I have done so much work on her the past couple of months and I have to install the 15" lcd and new cd player with speakers this weekend. My "give-a-sh@#tter" is almost broken.

Puravida,
Zach
