Was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Edson single lever engine control that mounts on the side of the wheel steering pedestel? There are actually two types, (see web site):

http://www.edsonmarine.com/sailboat/pdf/K29_36_39.pdf

Along with a soft or hard link between rudder and engine, it looks like a pretty slick set up. I could not locate prices for the outfit on the web site above.

Bob. I have the latest Edson catalog and I don't think your going to like the answer. The 1660 model mounted on the pedestal guard goes for $648 to$685 depending on size and type of guard you want. The 875 model that mounts below the compass is $769. While I would have loved the single lever set-up, I just yesterday orderd the 870 dual pedestal mounted controls for $234. Add another $110 or so for Edson cables and your still up there(you can buy cables for about 40% less, but not of the same quality...they say you can knot them and they'll not bind). Hope this helps. Tony,
Glad I was sitting down! The dual levers have suddenly became very attractive to me. Which engine do you have and how are going to run the cables? I will have to figure out where and how to mount ignition and tilt switches as well ... Yamaha 8 HP 4 Stroke w/pwr tilt. Good motor but not for the c250 ... way too big ... was on the boat when I bought it.

I've got a 9.9 hp evenrude. I ordered the kit to adapt the engine from
tiller control to remotes. I also had to order a kit to adapt the adapter from omc(evenrude parent)cable ends to standard type 33 cable ends.probably cost more in phone calls to figure this all out, but finally got to the bottom of it! without the tiller arm on the engine, I should get a pretty full swing in the engine well. As far as the cables, I plan to put another clamshell type opening into the front starboard sid of the fuel locker and route the cables down through the existing riser tube in the locker. I ordered the Edson cables since there will be a few turns and the man there claims they are second to none andwill run smooth even in a knot.... I hope he's right.

we have the dual levers on our 99 250wk. this is our third summer and last week we were starting to back out of our slip when we discovered that the control to the forward/reverse would not go into reverse. we have the edson pedestal set up, but got the cables from the place we bought the engine from. (we have a tohatsu 9.9 and he supplied us with the cables). fortuately for us we live about 1 1/2 hours from new bedford ma. where the edson world wide headquarters is located. we drove down there last week and got the replacement cable. THERE IS NO COMPARRISON TO THIS CABLE. it is so much more flexible and shifts with little or no effort. do yourself a favor and get the edson cables. (a word to the wise) get the 10 foot cable. we got the 8 and barely had enough to reach.

How are the cables run from the engine to the pedestal?

our pedestal and controls were installed at the factory, so our engine battery cable goes through a hole in the starboard side of the cockpit beside the engine and attaches to the battery in the battery compartment. the cables run throught the same hole and accross the battery compartment to a hole notched in the top of the aft berth where the ceiling and the back wall come together. it runs accross the ceiling about 6 to 8 inches to the vinyl snap on cover that goes into the bottom of the pedestal and they run up the pedestal to the controls. it is a tight squeeze in there. be SURE to order 10 foot cables. we measured from the pedestal to the enginge and thought 8 feet would be enough. it is BARELY enough. we did not take into account that the cable has to bend to go up the side of the boat and into the hole next to the engine. make sure you order edson cables. our origional cables were supplied by our motor dealer. there is NO COMPARRISON with the new edson cable. it shifts so smoothly and effortlessly. another thing to remember. the adapter that fits on the end of the cable that goes to your engine is SPECIFIC to your enging. it is not supplied with the cable.
