Hi. I'm installing a 3rd gen rudder on my friend's cat 250 wb. there are two "steps" in the forward edge of the rudder. how should these be set off against the transom? both under? one under? help!

you probably want the rudder height, or at least that of the tiller pin hole, to be the same as your old rudder. i assume from your question that your pintels also were not mounted by the factory. the way to make sure your tiller will be in the same place (re height) as it used to be is to lay the old rudder on top of the new one, lining up the holes where the tiller pin goes in (this one is pre-drilled by the factory). then, take a bolt, or the tiller pin and slide it through both rudders' tiller holes. now you have set the height equal. next, use the holes in your old rudder as guides for the new ones: however, i would go 1/4 to 1/3 inch higher with these pintel holes (dropping tiller height this much inthe process) so the projecting step of the rudder fits under the boat more easily.
