Hi Don, my uncle had one for years. In my limited memoir, I thought the Cal 24 and Catalina C25 were the same boat. It might be a good deal to eBay if you can get it cheap enough. My wife and I are heading out right now to do estate sailing so I can find stuff to sell on eBay to support my water sailing habit. Cheers.
I found some PHRF numbers... Cal 24-2: 228 (same as C-25 SR) Cal 24-3: 216 or 219 (a little faster than C-25 TR) Don't know what the difference between the -2 and -3 is... A friend had a Cal 25 (the flat-top with no side-decks) which seemed well-made. I believe the 24 has balsa-cored decks--something to check... Cals were built by Bangor Punta, the O'Day folks, in RI.
A cal 24 runs between 246 and 260 Cal 24-2 is 228-234 Cal 24-3 is 210 - 225
in general the Cal's in this size range are though to be under rated - meaning they perform better than their rating.
Bals Core decks aren't a real problem, provided the boat is dry. I am fairly certain the difference between the 2 and three is production runs, as it is with most boats....e.g. MKII etc.
I know of a few people who bought some 25's and haven't heard anything bad.
Derek - I've come to the realization that you would do well in an opti against people. The fact that the guy is close speaks a lot more about the boat than it does the skipper of that Cal....
