I have clam cleats forward of my cabin top winches that I use on my mainsail and jib halyard. Would I benefit from replacing them with rope clutches or just be spending money for nothing.
I think you would be better off with the clutches. They are handy to operate when handling halyards and the work slick. I wouldn't use clam cleats for that application because they could accidently release the line, especially if you are doing anything on the coach roof.
Clutches work better as the line gets older. Clutches also work better over a wider range on line diameter. It is a lot more difficult to kick a line out of a clutch, I've seen it happen, but it is a one in a million. Clutches will allow you to use a winch while hoisting (they are one way when completely closed)
Clutches are also nice for keeping the line in place as it's playing out, without the possibility of it catching in the clam just when you don't want it to. That used to happen on a previous boat where I used a fairlead in front of clam cleat for a jib dousing line--the line loved to find its way back into the clam as I was hoisting the jib--PITA!
If you add clutches, might as well make them doubles or triples while you're at it.
