Does anyone have any ides how to wash old sails. I have heard that you can put the sails in a tub with chlorine bleach. I have also heard that this would damage the sails. Has any one tried this? How about power washing. Thanks for any help. john
lay them out in the grass i just wash the spots with oxi clean spray. if they are really dirty try alittle mild liquid soap and start scrubbing. if you have mold try a little bleach diluted about 5 to i minimum. the power washing could cut a hole or tear the sewing. i wouldn't do anything that bunches the sail up, washing machine, tubs etc.i've seen people do this and they look like a cotten shirt without ironing. the sail material is not made to wrinkle that much

John, My favorite sail washing technique is to take them for a sail in the rain or on a windless day raise the dirty sail and hose it down, and using deck soap or better yet Dawn kitchen soap in a bucket with a soft boat brush on a telescoping handle gently brush at the stains. Let it dry in the sun( a great bleaching agent). I hesitate to roll a sail out on grass(though I've done so) for fear that I'll get more stains than I might get rid of.
Thank you for the advice. Most of my stains are due to dirt dobbers. They really like to build those nest on my sails. I have just finished my first bottom paint job and am now building a trailer extension. I hope to be on the water soon. Thanks again john
