Hello,

Quick update on a previous question about new lines and halyards -- got all but the V-100 halyards from Mauri Pro Sailing. Rod was very helpful, and I'm expecting delivery tomorrow, 5/8. Ended up going with Sta Set all around, due to combination of price, quality and the type of sailing I do -- weekends with the kids, the occasional race for fun, etc. I did spend the extra $$ on V-100 halyards for the main and jib, which I got from Layline. Mauri didn't have the V-100.

Anyway, here's my next purchase: a new marine stereo/CD player with 4 speakers. I'd also like the iPod adapter plug as bringing my iPod to the boat and plugging it into the stereo seems like an awesome thing.

I am very "stereo ignorant," and certainly not an an expert. All I know is that I like the music fairly loud with no distortion, and plan to mount two speakers on the forward bulkhead as well as two in the cockpit. A remote is not an issue.

My budget is around $150-$200 for the stereo and main speakers (maybe a little more) and then another $50 - $100 for another set of speakers.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff, I have a standard car stereo MUCH cheaper than a Marine Stereo. I'm in fresh water so I don't have to worry about the salt air. Also have 4 Bose speakers.

Two on the v-berth bulkhead.

Two mounted under the stern rail seats.

Wow! Great looking set up Tom. I'm in a transitional stage, having a great stereo with tape, but all my recent arias are on disc, SO if you live long enough you're in trouble. Should I submit my list of eight tracks on the swap meet or give them a decent burial in the yard.

Get a car stereo. You can buy a nice one that plays both regular CD-DA and CD-MP3 for $150 or even less. Much less $$$ than a marine stereo. To mount a car stereo in a boat, you could cut a rectangular slot in the bulkhead above the sink, or, use a PolyPlanar enclosure like Frank Hopper and I have. These are just white molded polyethylene housings that accept a car stereo and hang from a bracket like a Marine VHF radio or GPS or Radar display. Or, if you are handy with woodworking, you could just make an enclosure out of 3/8" plywood and stain+varnish or Cetol to make it look nice. I strongly recommend that you do not install either the stereo or the speakers in a way that requires making big holes in the primary bulkhead, as this is a structural member that has to withstand very high loading from the upper shroud via that big chain plate that bolts to it on each side. I occasionally see Catalina 25's with huge holes cut into the main bulkhead, right next to the chainplate, for mounting speakers or radios, and I wonder if the owner realizes what it will cost to replace a broken mast if that chainplate pulls out under load because of a big hole right next to it.
Don't mount a stereo or speakers in the lower bulkheads under the settees or quarterberth as the moisture from the bilges that is always present in those spaces will ruin any electronics sooner or later.
