Trivial question, but everyone has been so helpful.
Last night I tried to lower my keel while tied at ny slip, with thunderous results. All i did was turn the winch counterclockwise (1) turn and BAM !!! i though the thing fell off, what a sound.
Is this normal or am i doing something wrong with the crank.
What you describe is not normal by any means. I would checkout the winch, cable and anything else I could look at. I had a similiar thing happen on my C22....I thought the boat was going to break in two. I ended up taking the winch apart and fixing it but you may be better off getting a new winch if that's the problem. Good luck.
Before you blame the winch, check to make sure the cable is still attached. You didn't say whether the winch free wheeled, if it did then it probably is the winch brake. Also if it came down with as much force as you discribe you should check the integrity of the keel housing. A free falling keel can do a lot of damage.

Frank, There is no brake release on the stock keel winch. The brake works like a clutch, all you need do is turn the winch handle counter clockwise to lower the keel. It is very tempting to oil the winch if it makes alot of noise. Absolutely do not oil the winch. If any oil gets on the clutch it will be ruined. You might check the archives on this subject, there has been quite alot of discussion over the years. If the winch is old and you don't feel confident that it can be fixed, buy a new one from Catalina Yachts or Catalina Direct.
