Has anyone replaced the "Catalina" cooler with a 12V Thermoelectric cooler? If you have what manufacturer and size did you use? I'm going to replace mine and was curious what others have done...I appreciate your feedback...Dan #727
A friend gave me one of those 12 volt coolers. My plan was to installed it on the boat but it was to noisy. Granted it was very old, maybe the newer ones are more quite. I picked up one of the 5 day coolers instead.
I used dry ice on my last three day trip and it's great. Not only would it have lasted much longer than three days, it gives you the coldest beer, bar none (in fact it cracked a bottle that came in contact with it). I use a mixture of dry and regular ice, with dry ice on the bottom, a little insulation (like a towel) on top of it, then food/drinks, then fill the rest up with regular ice. All the supermarkets in my area (L.A.) carry dry ice now.
Danny, If you decide to get a 5 day replacement cooler to replace the "Catalina blue cooler", you may want to look for one with a thin lid. The ones with thick lids will restrict how high you will be able to open the cooler before it hits the bottom of the drawers.
Danny: I have an Igloo KoolMate 36 that I use for cruising. I installed a cigarette lighter under the accessory panel and I plug in to that. I set up an extension to the built in lip for the blue cooler to level the Kool Mate and hold it in place. This extension can be easily lifted off to fit the blue cooler. The key to using the thermoelectric cooler is to plug it in with the AC/DC Kool Mate converter for four to six hours ahead of filling it. I usually place a few frozen bottles of water to help it keep it cool. These I use for drinking water later. I plug my unit into the truck's power receptical on the way to the boat and then into the boat's batteries. For longer cruises, Sac Delta, I use dry ice in the blue cooler an seal the lid with duct tape until the second week. Dry ice will deminish its cooling capcity quickly once it is exposed to the air. The usual drill is to transfer what we need to the Kool Mate and reseal the blue cooler. The Kool Mate keeps thing below 39 degrees and only draws 4.5 amps. I use battery 1 for house needs and battery 2 for starting. I charge my batteries with my outoard or with shore power when I go into a marina. I also have a solar unit to help maintain the batteries. The system works well except when my brother plugged the unit in on the heating side and ruined several days of food, several cans beer and three bottles of good wine befor we caught it.
we replaced our original cooler with the igloo 50, 5 day cooler. we keep it on the gas locker. perfect height for a captains seat. and looks like part of the boat. we installed a shelf where the origional cooler was, and a microwave and a goodie bin is now in its place.

sorry, i dont have a digital camera. (probably should get one!) the cooler is a white ultra cold 50 and sits on the gas locker, they actually make a cushion that fits it, but didnt bother with that and is held in place with a bungie. the microwave is on a prefinished white shelf from home depot and is screwed in place from inside the sink and behind the little wall in the aft berth. the microwave is held in place with 2 sets of tv hold downs. there was about 7 inches left over under the shelf, so found a rectangular basket that fits perfectly in that space and the lip that used to keep the original cooler in place, keeps the basket from falling out, yet you can pull it out like a drawer. great space for keeping snacks, paper towels, etc.
