JUST GOT MY UPDATES FROM CATALINA DIRECT. GUESS I'LL START BY ASKING PROS AND CONS OF IDASAILOR RUDDER. AM IN NEED OF A REPLACEMENT, WHAT DOES THE GANG THINK OF THIS NEW OFFERING FROM CD? JOHN ON MS ACHSA
I have bought a rudder from Idasailor, it was not for a C25, I didnt own a C25 a the time, however it was a very good rudder, much better that the old rudder, I have heard good things from other C25 owners about the Idasails rudder, I beleive its a good rudder for a C25. hope that helps. I just bought my C25 this month, I plan on replace the rudder but have got a whole list of things that need to be done first. Cheers
Bought my Idasailor rudder last summer after my original rudder snapped at the waterline. I couldn't believe the difference...talk about power steering. At the time, Idasailor was able to get the rudder to me within 7 days...CD was an approximate 4 week wait.
I bought the IdaSailor rudder last summer, too, after my original one snapped off. I thought I was happy with it last fall and early spring when conditions were VERY light. However, with bigger breeze this spring, and the fact that I race and carry more sail than if I was cruising, I found that the IdaSailor did not work well for me.
I kept rounding up both downwind under spinnaker and upwind with the 135 and full main in about 20 knots of breeze. I sold the IdaSailor on this site this spring, with the caveat that I felt it was best in light conditions or for those who reef or shorten sail early.
The "old" original rudder I bought from a friend and rebuilt is doing fine and handling the conditions beautifully. Now, if I can just get it to hold together.....
Gary B. s/v Encore! #685
PS. BTW: Contrary to the CD info, the IdaSailor IS approved for use in One Design racing. I proposed it last fall and it passed the Association in a vote of the membership.
The Idasailor rudder looks like it is injection molded high density polyethylene. Anyone know how well this plastic stands up to UV exposure over time? I used to have a set of those West Marine HDPE add-on swim ladder steps and they got brittle and broke 4 or 5 years after installation. In my experience, only a few plastics have real long-term durability when constantly exposed to strong UV.
I looked at the IdaSailor rudder, and decided against it.
First, I race the boat (PHRF), and the new rudder would have to be reviewed. Chances are I would have taked a rating hit... as much as 9 seconds, and going from 222 to 213 would totally suck.
The other thought is that HDPE will have more flex under high load than glass skinned foam core. Flex is bad - in my mind it didn't make sense to switch.
I bought a new foil from Catalina. It's not a high class foil (like on a J or a Farr), but it doesn't screw my rating.

Matt this isn't necessarily the case - Most PHRF rules have an exclusion clause dealing with class rules. Our class rules allow the rudder therefore PHRF should allow it.
