We bit the bullet and bought the Cool mate CLM5 5,000 btu A/C.
(I know, we could have saved a fortune installing one of the $90 units from Lowes, a whole bunch of reasons moved us to the cool mate.)

So now the fun begins... installing the thing.

Done due diligence and studied loads of articles on how to install the unit, including the very clear and easy reading manual that came with it.

We have the C250WB. From what I can figure out, the only place for the cold water inlet scoop is just astern of the keel.

I'm planning on installing th AC unit on the port side in the area aft of the hanging closet. I'll run the cooling water outflow to either a T on the bilge pumpout thru-hull or the bathroom waste thru-hull, unless anyone can see a real problem with that. The alternative is to add a new above water thru hull just for the colling water outlet.

The cooling water supply pump has to be below the unit but above the strainer and inlet scoop. So the scoop has to be pretty well at the deepest part of the boat.

I think the water ballast tank only goes back as far as the sump aft of the steps where I intend to put the inlet scoop.

Does anyone know how thick the hull is beneath the bilge access panel astern of the cabin steps?

Paul

Paul.... I added a seacock at the bilge and if I recall correctly the glass is about 1/4 inch there.

Update on initial progress.

I made a cardboard box the same size as the A/C unit with room to spare for pipes, electrics, etc. (much easier to use the box to figure the future position of the A/C unit than manhandling the 30+lbs unit!)

Good news, the unit will fit really well juat aft of the bathroom.
I'll build a shelf out of ply and attach it to the side of the hanging closet and the back of the bathroom bulkhead. About 7" above the quarter berth mattress.

Now to figure out where the electrics will go.
(read casey's book cover to cover several times)
Idea is to install a power connector on the weather side of the aft bathroom bulkhead, right where the rope bag hangs on it's 4 studs.
(so it will be behind the bag.)
That will intrude through into the bathroom above the portapotti.
Then I'll run the power cables back through the wooden bulkhead and into the cabin behind the bathroom.

Now for the lateral thinking... Installing the main circuit breaker and the 3 swtich breaker panel on the aft bulkhead of the bathroom again, above the back of the porta-potti.

This means we'll have to go into the bathroom to operate the breakers.

Any "duh's" on that idea?
Paul
