How does the Garmin GPSmap 76 measure up to the other hand helds on the market? I hope "top o' the heap" 'cause it was a Father's Day gift from my kids to replace my unreliable Magellan 315/320.

Lowerance H2oC is color for $260.00. My brother has had the same unit you got and he loves it. He has had it for over 4 years, no problems. I think that you have to use codes to unlock the software.

The Garmin 76 is an excellent unit. This is the unit used by several undergraduate courses at UVM. Needless to say they have been "tested" under almost any imaginable condition and perform well. Check http://gpsinformation.net/waas/g76/g-76-map.html for a formal review. One note, the 76 antenna is designed to be held vertically, unlike many units which work best horizontally.
