A while back I posted some photos of sailing in New York Harbor. Someone (Frank, I think?) wanted more and asked for a URL.

I'm working on that, and adding more photos as I find them on various archived CDs. In the mean time, I went out again earlier this week for a pleasant afternnon sail. I did NOT get a photo of the Liberty Island Ferry that nearly ran us down, but I did get a few good shots of Ellis Island, the gateway to America:

It's hard to keep the camera steady when you're heeling and fighting ferry wakes:

Rich,
Nice picts. Where do you keep the boat?
I’m a Brooklynite and lived in the village for 25 years before that.

I keep the boat at the new mooring field at Pier 40; Houston Street and the Hudson River. It's a bit choppy in there, but it's great to be that close to the harbor.

Last year we kept it at the 79th Street Boat Basin. Whereas I miss the amenities 79th Street had (the cafe, laundry, showers, a 24 hour dock master), I like not needing a motor for our dinghy and not having our direction and destination dictated by the flow of the river. The harbor is a much more adventurous and interesting sailing area than the river.

And you certainly learn the right-of-way rules in a hurry.

And how to tack in a hurry.

I haven't come across the QM2 yet, but the Norwegian Dawn is big enough!
