I have a Mercury 9.9 2-stroke outboard, I was on the lake this weekend and the cord broke, I was able to get the cowling off and tie on an extension to get it started, but I did not have any tools on board for further repairs. Just wondering if anyone has successfully replaced the cord while engine is on back of boat?
If memory serves, I believe someone posted something in the Tech Tips about this subject. Other than that I would order a repair manual and gitterdone.
I replaced the pull cord yesterday evening, it was not difficult. I just made sure I remembered how I took it apart, there is a spring that recoils the cord, but it has a cover so it did not come apart. I just took my time making sure not to drop anything. 3 screws for the cover and then one main screw that attachs the pulley that the cord wraps around.
My '89 6 horse Johnson outboard has he pull cord a top cover. Pull the cover off and take it to the shop. Some motors (like my 4 horse) don't have a removable top cover.
