By extending the tiller and controlling it with a bungee, I'm able to sit/stand by the traveler and jib winches and adjust course with a gentle nudge on the extension occassionally. 3 1/2 feet of 2" PVC and a bungee secured to the lazerette hatch locks. Total cost under 10 bucks. Works better than the Tiller Tamer.

Nice clean job.
Is that a plastic end cap on the other end of the PVC pipe?

Yep. Looks kinda phallic, don't it The bungee's wrapped 3 times around the pipe. I guess exact tension depends on "feel" and hands off interval for course correction.

No, split backstay was standard on the 2001's. Just installed the pipe, works great motoring, sailing with it tomorrow. Should work well close hauled, probably nsg off the wind.

Just back from a light air sail to Catalina and back. My extension rig held course for periods up to 20 minutes, corrections only due to wind shifts and sea surface disturbances. A very inexpensive but effective self-steering mod.

If you extended that through the cabin and out the V-berth hatch, you could captain the boat from the bow....be good for swapping headsails while underway.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Actually, I like your mod and can see where it would be very useful for staying out of the sun under the bimini without having to stretch back to the tiller. And I'm not exactly thrilled with the inability of my tiller-tamer to maintain a course for more than about a minute.
