We are taking a family vacation next week (August 6-11) to the lower Chesapeake area--renting a house in Cape Charles, but making day trips throughout the area. I am somewhat reluctant to ask, since in addition to myself and my wife we have three kids, ages 9 to 17, but if anyone was so inclined we freshwater sailors would sure love to get a taste of sailing on the Bay. I would be glad to provide dinner and a quantity of your favorite beverage.

Mike, if I weren't having surgery next week I'd try to arrange something. Greg and Laura Lohse in Cape Charles have a schooner on which they take paying passengers. You might check them out. I lived about 20 miles north of Cape Charles for eight years. The Shore is a very special place. Make sure you eat at Stingray's at the Cape Center -- just trust me and don't believe in appearances (the locals call it Chez Exxon). Order from the specials board. They probably have the best crabcakes and stuffed Rockfish I've ever eaten.

Get a copy of Kirk Mariner's book, "Off 13" to use as a touring guide. Ride up and down Bayside and Seaside Roads, rather than horribly ugly Rt. 13. We lived in Franktown, where I was pastor of the United Methodist Church. Also make sure you do the day trip from Onancock to Tangier Island. That's another universe. Say hello to Albert Crockett, the one-eyed dockmaster at Onancock.

Enjoy!

Brooke

Mike,

I am a bit too far - I'm on the Potomac in Washington, DC area. Oh ! That's right...you are a freshwater sailor and want a taste of the saltwater. Can't help you there. The saltwater even at high tide does not make it even close to my area.
