We set out tomorrow for a summer visit to Great Lakes less the boat. We've only got a couple of weeks free and the car gets 32 mpg while the truck pulling the boat gets 12. Boat batteries needed replaced also so we decided the overall expense wasn't reasonable.
We are not too far from retirement and plans are to spend 3-4 months north during summers with several weeks of that dedicated to cruising the Great Lakes. The boat will probably be stored there instead of an annual haul at current gas prices.
Also, the local Corp of Engineers lake has become a mud hole after going online as the city water supply and is no longer the wonderful sailing lake it was. Ramps are unsuitable for launching and the lake seems to be in limbo, with some PR efforts to persuade the public that its all about excessive evaporation and all will be well if it rains more.
Its not just the city water, barge traffic on the Red River keeps demanding more release as well so the recreational use of the lake in my opinion isn't going to get cured any time soon, if ever. It is a shame... the lake was once beautiful and fulfilled an area need for water recreation.
Oh, did I mention that the lake the city built and got its water from for seventy years and is privately developed by the wealthy only evaporates a few inches in the hot summer months now that it no longer supplies the city water.
At any rate, there is no need for a sailboat here... but with retirement only a few years away, sailing remains a hope.
That's a sad state of affairs Arlyn, however my guess is you will enjoy your trip sailing or not, besides this road trip may afford the opportunity for reconnaissance.
Somehow I think you'll find a way to get the boat out! Seeing all the work you have done, it's a love you are probably not willing to give up. Have a great trip.
Retirement? What's that?
(25Years in the navy, 18 retired, still working my buns off. Only way I would retire willingly is if I win the 'Free Boat Upgrades for Life' lottery.
John Vining and I (the Cat 25/250/Capri 25 Upper Great Lakes Cruising Assoc.)are planning a cruise to Isle Royal next year. He is keeping his boat in Sault Ste Marie, MI instead of Ohio due to gas prices also. He intends hauling from the Sault to Houghton MI where we will set out for the Island. We have plent of water here on lake Superior and loads of scenery.
Since you are planning on retiring soon and leaving your boat "up north", you may want to consider joining our fledgling group. No fees, no dues, no meetings, no anything accept annual group cruises in each others cruising areas. John sailed for four days up here in Northern Michigan the first year. We had planned on cruising the North Channedl in N. Lake Huron this past year but sailed in the Nationals instead. Next year its Isle Royal.
Give it some thought. Everyone is welcome to join us either with a boat or as crew.
