On the subject of rope clutches - when the clutch is under load it is VERY difficult to open. If I take the strain off with the winch it is easy to open, but I'm wondering if anything can be done to the clutch to make it easier under load. (If the handle is in the vertical position it's not a problem, but I don't like to sail with the clutch half closed.)
A clutch should be easy to open under load, and should allow you to ease even a taut line out in a slow and controlled manner. A stopper, which looks similar to a clutch, is supposed to have the load taken up by the winch before attempting to release the stopper. I haven't heard of any C-25s equipped with stoppers, but since so many have had their deck layouts modified over the years, I though I'd mention the possibility.
