Preventers to try: CDs strung from the bow pulpit (Old AOL, etc CDs) Owl (sold in West Marine/Boat US) Beachball with big eyes (sold in West Marine/Boat US) Throw dead fish into boats 3 or away from my boat
I tried the CDs strung from the bow and above the lifelines to the mast. Nothing in the cabin/cockpit area. About 40% reduction in turds. No reduction for other areas (without the CDs) which were less prone to the turds anyway.
Hung the beachball near the bow from the furling rig jib sheets. Hung the owl from the end of the boom. ZERO TURDS from bow to stern ! This is only after several days so far but fantastic. We shall see how this goes over the long term.
I had the same issue last season. Boat was covered !!! Bought some products from a company called Bird B Gone. They are online. They were great. I bought some spikes that line the boom and bought 3 spiders. 1 clamps onto the front rail, two others sit on sandbags above hatch and in front of mast.
No bird problems at alll - 0 poop!!!
Worked like a gem. I invested about $150.00 in all of this but going to the boat at night and not having to start cleaning gull crap was well worth it
My problem is not birds. It's spiders. They drop from the trees in the spring and make them themselves at home. During the summer months, when I have to have a mooring light on, they gorge on the resulting bugs. Believe me , I have some big mothas and they have nasty diarea(?). CDs definately won't work and squashing them on sight is out of the question. I've noticed that they don't swim well though. I think it has something to do with the breast stroke and not having any arms, or too many legs, or something like that.
I also discovered why I've been going slower lately. Cobwebs! From bow pulpit to masthead, they're everywhere. I'll bet they'd make great sail material. North sails could make a killing off my boat alone.
