I have just recently resurected my boat from the dead. I have done everything but clean the deck. Any suggestions on what to use on the deck and cockpit on a boat that has a lot of oxidation and grease?
Wash with Dawn dish soap. It rally cuts grease. follow with a fine grit rubbing compound, then 3M boat wax. I hand wax every spring and apply rubbing compound every other year, again by hand. I've never put anything on the non-skid though. I do the same for the mast which is painted white.
For the non-skid areas they make a few products that do not become slippery but have some wax/protect finish qualities. I bought Aurora Sure Step which is bought by mail order. I have not used that much of it so far and so cannot provide an analysis yet. However, Practical sailor just did a review of 3 products. They evaluated Aurora Sure Step, Starbrite Non-Skid Cleaner and Woody's ...forget exact name but it is for fiberglass non-skid and eletrical connections (weird combo). They rated Aurura last of the 3 and Woody's was supposedly excellent.
I was just in the Boat US store today (The West Marine at Boat US Headquarters in Virginia is still going by the Boat US name) and the Woody's product was about $33 for 8 ounces ! Ouch ! The Starbrite product was a much more reasonable $14 for 32 ounces and had a favorable review in Practical Sailor. The Aurora product with shipping is expensive and supposedly not as good as the Starbrite product.
But here is the best deal of all ! Boat US has a clearance area where they have some stuff that is being discontinued because it carries their name. They have a Boat US Non-Skid Cleaner which....is very, very similar in container, ounces, description and directions as the Starbrite product. The salesman said that it is made by Starbrite but was sold under the Boat US name. Since it is on the clearance shelf, they marked it down to $1.70 for 32 ounces ! Wow ! At that price, I decided to buy 2 containers.
Also, unrelated to your topic, I brought in an old blue Taylor made fender which would not hold pressure - had a small bubble leak from the inflator valve. Boat US took it back and gave me a new one for free ! Taylor has a lifetime warranty on their fenders against bursting or leaking. But Boat US told me they have had one or two customers bring them back because there fender was dirty ! Taylor does not warranty against dirt ! Ha !
