When I first started looking for a keel boat (1989) I looked at a Hunter 26. One of the glaring defects in the boat was the deck to hull joint. In some spots there was a gap I could stick my thumb into. In others the gap was filled with some kind of goop which sagged below the joint. Generally the boat seemed like it was very chaply built. Next to the Hunter was a Catalina 25. My wife, who was somewhat ambivolent about boats at the time, explained how much she liked the C25. I was so impressed with it I bought a new one two months later.
I'm not sure if it was that particular boat - a lemon, or if Hunters have had long standing production problems. Judging by your observation I would say the latter is the case.
