Yesterday while sailing through Lake Macatawa on my way out to Lake Michigan I passed Eldean's Shipyard ( http://www.eldean.com/ ); which is just before the Channel. What did I see sitting dry docked, but the 2005-2006 ABN-AMRO TWO Volvo Ocean Racer!!!!! I had to come about 2 or 3 times and within 100 ft just to get a really good look at it to make sure my vision was not failing me. The paintjob is hard to miss. The following link is THE boat I am describing. http://team.abnamro.com/web/show/id=65440 . Unfortuantely I beleive it was the same boat that Hans Horrevoets was swept from and did not survive. Tonight I went over to the shipyard and looked deckside as I stood on the canting keel. very impressive.
I am going to asssume that the Devos's (Dick[Michigan Gubenatorial Cand.]& brother Doug)have sold Windquest ( http://www.transpacificyc.org/php-entry-sys/tp05-yacht_bio.php?yacht_id=86 )and purchased the Volvo Racer being that it has a canting keel. Winquest was an older model MaxZ86 that did not have the canting keel option at the time it was built, and just missed setting the 24 hour speed/distance record due to substantial lateral drift. The ABN AMRO 2 was titled with accomplishing the feat this year.
I will try and get a few photos tonight, or hopefully before they repaint/store her.
There is a very cool kanting keel race boat here in the boatyard next to Fleet 7. It is in the spot where Windquest usually sits when she is here. It is named "Stark Raving Mad". Incredible boat. Besides a 15 foot deep kanting fin keel with bulb, 10 foot deep rudder, there is another fin keel (no bulb) that does not kant 5 feet in front of the kanting keel.
Start Raving Mad is Pugh 66 and raced in the San Diego - Ensenada (little Ensenada) race.
I'm really impressed with that AMRO website you gave us a link to. Thanks. Those volvo racers make the Americas cup boats and their race look like weenies "Well golly, we can only race if the wind is 12 to 13 knots and the waves 2 to 3 feet, and only if we have a full compliment of lawyers on board."
Hey Jim, the only conselation I get in the winter when going to the in-laws is passing a dry-docked Windquest, and seeing the shear magnifisance of the vessel and dreaming of spring. From my understaning those micro keels are set for steering balance as well as for the twin rudders.
Correction/Rettraction- It has been brought to my attnetion that ABN2 may not have been sold and is only in Holland, MI for a layover, and is scheduled to be shipped to the Netherlands Jan-Feb 07. Of course my assumption was that it had been purchased by the Devos's (the only conclusion to draw why it would be in Holland, MI); in which all indications the assumptions I made were incorrect. However, another bold assumption was that last week ABN announced it had decided to not sponser another entry in the 2008-09 VOR which would put the boat in line for sale as the No2 boat that has no future engagements.
