This weekend will be a great time for a full (or nearly) moon sail. It is one of our favorite family/adult time sails. The littlest one in pyjamas in the cockpit til the moon comes up then off to bed so the adults can enjoy the romance of a beautiful night of sailing. Hope you all get to enjoy it!

Thanks for the heads up about the moon. Ill be off this weekend for the first time in three weeks. Getting out on the water and spending the night is on the top of the to do list. Ill also be out on the bay for the 4th. Its great to watch the fireworks on the boat at night.

Another time we always plan a night sail is for the Perseid Meteor Shower (August 9-11th), which happens to fall on my friend's birthday. So that's become a yearly ritual. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

JM-
What a great print/drawing! Heh, heh. Reminds me of the "Owl and the cat", which I learned to recite in French, no less,in fourth grade. Speaking of classic sailing references; is everyone with children familiar with "The Sailor Dog"? It was my favorite book as a child and I think I've been quite influenced by it! Scuppers is my hero.
Please tell me where can I get a copy of that delightful print.
Thanks-
Kathleen on "Jolie"

Jeez, my reply just posted and I am astounded at what has happened to the title of that very famous book/poem about the Owl and the blankCat. Those asteriks are certainly not mine! What is this censorship? It's pretty ridiculous...

Kathleen,

This is the first time I've seen something like this . . . but I think your post invoked one of the "features" of this forum software. There is a list of words contained within the code that are considered strictly verboten. You've apparently found one of them. So, smile <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>, no one is actively censoring your post.

BTW, Scuppers the "Sailor Dog" was one of my son's favorite books . . . he's now almost nine years old and has moved on to Harry Potter tales . . . IMHO, not an improvement!

Now that's a funny post - What dirty little birds you all are! On a related note, I don't suppose anyone remembers the picture from "Go, Dog Go" (Spelled backwards that's "Og, *** Og"). "Now it is night. Three dogs - at a party - on a boat - at night" I must have been five at the time, but I'm sure that's when I first knew I wanted a boat.

Well we took your advice Kathleen and went on our first sunset/night sail Saturday. A lovely sail with a nice breeze sailing that kept us at 4-5 knots. Beautiful! I think we would've stayed out all night, but around 11pm we were getting sleepy so we called it a night.

Can't wait for the August Persiods (spelling?) meteor shower - its always been one of my favorites - even before I was a sailor.

Thanks everyone for the recommendation on the August Perseid Meteor Showers. I was unaware of this event. We'll definitely try to be sailing then. The print I was asking about was the Phoebe Palmer print of the lady in the dinghy. Thanks for the line on Scuppers. I already have several copies! Full moon sail Friday night was lovely and we anchored out for the night, had a nice swim after breakfast and then motored in to fulfill all our familial duties (50th b'day party & a college grad party). My husband keeps complaining that we have too many social obligations that interfer with our sailing but we were back out Sunday and now our older children are vying for a sail tonight. Should be another good full moon night! Hope you all had good sailing this weekend.

Two years ago, about 1:30 am... a wind change brought chop into the bay in which we were anchored for the night during a North Channel cruise. It wasn't long before the action was tossing me against the side of the hull...

Sleeping bag in hand...I moved to cockpit... After a short period, it became evident... that there was no more sleep to be enjoyed. There was a full moon so we decided to haul anchor and make our way thru the Mississagi Pass and head south in Lake Huron. We enjoyed a moderate breeze and with the moon near dead ahead... the boat moved well and the shimmering of the moonlight on the water counts as one of my best sailing moments.

During a ninety mile crossing of Lake Huron a year or two previous... shortly before midnight, I saw my first exploding meteor. What a fantastic sight...with the multitude of fire trails exploding away.

Your right...night sailing can be great.

On the other hand, it can be very dark. Again, two years ago... our planned evening anchorage proved unfit for entry because it was at the moment a lee shore to heavy surf from strong direct winds. We had approached the anchorage only an hour prior to dark... which meant an alternative would cause us to sail several more hours. This night offered no natural light from moon or stars.

Fortunately we had a chart of the intended harbor on the lap top and used OziExplorer with a gps feed providing a moving display that guided us directly to the markers without incident. It was no problem to enter an unknown harbor with a narrow channel in pitch dark.... something unheard of prior to gps.

Our favorite leg was on a B class boat. We left Cleveland at 19:30 (~80 degress) and ran with a spinnaker all the way to Canada. At about 21:30 the A class boats started passing us. Everbody was shining spot lights on each others hulls to see who was who.
Then we shot a line for Detroit and everyone got seasick <img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle> - our least favorite leg!
