Recently I received a questionaire, seemingly from a significant someone here on the forum, and when the attachment was downloaded(I never download attachments)my antivirus mechanism indicated that a worm was in the attachment,(a kles 33)and that it was contained. Thank you POSEIDON. I then advised the someone that the questionaire was from that there was a worm in his message and was informed that he didn't send same. And so I send this message to the members advising/asking if y'all have had any experience regarding said questionaire? I send this message in the hope that you might be spared the annoyance of such goings on. Reminds me of the CB craze of the 60/70's and the crank calls therein. It seems that the anonymity of the medium encourages the uncourageous. What am I to think...the admiral is out of the asylum again... SHEESCH.
Thanx for the info Val. I'm still not sure what the difference between a worm, a Trojan or a virus is, but I have McAfee and Zonealarm running. We got DSL hooked up last week and now the machine is crank'n!
Val - Altho' I have not received that worm I did get the "SirCam" Virus once. What these things do is go into your computer and use your e-mail addresses to send out the virus or worm to more and more people. The SirCam was also sending out my private files as attatchments. I recommend the Norton anti virus, and frequent updates that can be done on the web for free. The software will update itself in the background but it is worth doing manualy if you hear of some one you know getting a virus or worm. When I get a warning I don't even isolate the file I delete it ASAP no matter what it is.
One issue remains... Val's "someone" is still infected and apparently doesn't know it. The same virus that is sending out e-mails without "someone's" knowledge could also be doing more damage, and could be sending "someone's" personal information to the bad guys out there. If somebody in your e-mail address book tells you you've sent an infected e-mail to them, if you think you didn't, you probably have a problem! <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'm Val's Mr. "someone". When Val let me know that he'd rec'd a virus from me last week as an attached survey I had to respond that I had not sent out any survey questionaires to anyone. Norton did detect a couple of "hits" from a virus last week. Each time the warning came up on the screen, the virus was quaranteened and immediately deleted. I also ran an update on Norton (I update at least once a week as it is) and a full scan of my computer. Nothing showed.
So, I'm in the dark as to where the message Val rec'd came from.
Most computer virus systems work by entering your computer address book. This is done without your knoledge. It mails itself to everyone on the list you keep in your computer. To avoid doing this I keep no names in my address book but rather write them all down in a paper address book. Its a bit slower but it stops any missdirected anger over my computer sending out a virus if it does get in. Another tip is to keep your general mail on Yahoo or Hot mail and open , view it there.
