I am not familiar with SF, is that just a particularly nasty spot, or was he out in seas too large, or...? I have never sailed in the ocean, it would be nice to learn a little from this if someone has time...
Hi Kevin, I've never sailed there but my next door neighbor sailed in the bay for ten years before moving to Michigan. she says there is alway a wind at that point because of the funnle effect of the winds being funneled into that narrow gap. Someday I'll get to sail there and hope to have more luck than that guy. Cheers.
From what I understand from folks who sail the Bay, this particular area is to be avoided by anyone except surfers. These guys had apparently trailered up to SF for a day of sailing.
The boat is not a Catalina. I believe it's a San Juan 22 or 23.
Here is what had happened, The boat is a Santana 22 there were 2 on board and they were sailing out of the bay, they are locals and should have been watching what they were doing, you have to go on the other side of the bridge structure because the water at a lower tide causes a surf. The boat was recovered and was for sale on EbaY a couple of months ago.
