Found this slide show on the Advent Of Rescue 21. It goes over the advantages of the VHF/DSC radios and how to use them. You will need to cut up your speakers.
I sat through the 35 minute presentation which I'd recommend and have made mandatory for my crew. After examining the process for acquiring one's MMSI code I came across information that leads me to believe the MMSI code will be stored in the Coast Guard's database but will not be recognized by Canada unless one applies for an FCC license (form 605). This is what I have deducted from my research. Before I continue down the road to filing for a license I'd like to know from other members what they did to: 1. get an MMSI number that Canada will respond to and, 2. operate VHF DSC legally in Canadian waters and Canadian ports.
