I went into the Cell store the other day because I had broken my cell phone, well I didn't break it, I would just be sitting there at work and the stupid thing would just shut itself off, and I wouldn't realize it until I would need to make a phone call in the field, or my wife would call me.
At the store they just gave me a card to call the support line, and after an hour of talking to some lady, they sent me a replacement phone. In a week I had the new phone in hand, but had to use my old Battery. Needless to say it wasn't the phone at all but the connection between the phone and battery.
So I went back to the store and started looking at the new phones that they are selling. I am 1/2 way done with my 2 year contract, so I didn't get the discount on the phone. I ended up buying a Sony Ericsson's W810i. The phone is marked as a Walkman phone, it has a memory stick slot, and I bought a 2 gig card for the job at hand.
The phone has a 2 megapixel camera, takes 60 second videos, has Internet connection to the web, and is a FM Walkman, Plays MP3, MP4, and AVI files. It does Rss feeds, and a ton of other stuff. I forked over 300.00 for the phone w/ a 100 rebate from my Cell provider.
I have been the last week taking the phone to its extremes, I have loaded around 500 songs on the memory card, the phone connects directly up to my laptop via a USB cord, file transfers are fast. The phone will charge itself thru the USB port, and I have been really impressed with the ability of getting FM Radio and playing my MP3's.
Speakers- I got this small pair of Sony speakers with the phone they are around 1" square and they connect right thru the port on the bottom of the phone, It is also Blue tooth, but it came with a set of Sony ear buds (really the best I have ever used) they fit into the ear very comfortably, and there is a on/ off button that rest around your chest. The little speakers really do put out a surprising sound for how small they are.
Internet- I have been at all of the sailing sites that I go to all of the time. The browser that comes with the phone sucks, it downloads about 1/2 the content then displays a message saying that the page displayed is incomplete. I have been able to get onto a slew of weather sites, and look at radar images, and read the forecast. I have been messing around with different downloads for the phone, Everyone wants you to subscribe to their site. Last night I again was searching the Internet for software, and I came across "OPERA". This is a third party browser for cells, so I thought I would download it. How it works is that it downloads the whole page to a server then compresses the page to display on your cell phone. I was up last night hitting all of the sites again, and I could read everything, I could see all the photos, and I was screaming along listening to my mp3's and browsing the net.
I had bought this little phone for my work, but I have seen what a great application it has for the boats. Just think ONE unit that connects to the net, plays music, takes Photos, takes video, and plays movies. You can even subscribe to get local TV broadcast, ESPN, ect, ect, ect.
I have the same problem as Frank. Unfortunately in this locale, Verizon is the only real choice, believe me, I've tried them all and even though Verizon sucks like a Hoover, it doesn't suck half as much as the rest of the choices. Can't even buy one of those Sony's unlocked as Verizon doesn't use sim cards!
Chris, Glad to hear you like the Sony/Ericsson phone. I bought a lot of stock in Ericcson a few years back and am counting on it for extra retirement income
You might want to look into the Motarola "Q" It is an all in one phone and is free if you sign up for verizon wireless internet. My Dad has it and it is barely slower than cable internet. Cheers.
Chris, You say your phone was shutting istelf off like it's a bad thing
BTW: The furler works great. We have been out twice since it has been installed and it sure is nice not leaving the cockpit to put up the jib. Thanks for selling it to me.
When you miss 8 calls in an hour clients tend to start to get pissed if it happens day after day. I really was at the lake sailing :0
I am glad that you like the furler, I still am a bit withdrawn from selling it, and I'm sure that it will come back on me one day when I want to purchace a furler for the boat. I took the money from the furler and bought the new Harken Carbo Foil, I hope it works as well as the furler did for me.
I really like this little phone..I need smaller hands
